Florida Program Director Promotes Senior Enrichment Program During Hospital New Hire Orientation

(Chipley, FL) Program Director for the Senior Enrichment Program at Northwest Florida Community Hospital, Connie Smelcer, is promoting her program in a unique way. The hospital has allowed the program to be included in New Employee Orientation (NEO) to inform the hospital staff of their services. This gives them the opportunity to tell new employees the details of what the program does and how they help elderly patients in the community.

According to the Connie, “We empower the entire group to be able to do ‘something’ for the patients they meet that may be struggling. Many of our patients only learn about our services by having a healthcare professional refer them to Senior Enrichment.” They provide examples of some issues their patients might be dealing with such as difficulty sleeping, problems with isolation, life changes, anxiety and depression.

Another unique way they ensure the program stays top of mind is by providing each department of the hospital with folders with information about the program that they are encouraged to give to patients they feel might need help. Program staff also encourage employees to not just think about patients they serve in the hospital but also neighbors, family members, or members of their church or community.

The program staff at the Senior Enrichment Program have done an excellent job educating their community and their hospital about the vital services that they offer. Great job to Connie and her staff.
