Did You Know – Louisville, GA was the Former Capital of Georgia

(Louisville, GA) Did you know that Louisville, GA, home to Jefferson Hospital, one of UltraGroup Healthcare’s partner hospitals, was also once the capital of the state of Georgia? Louisville, Georgia, served as the third state capital from 1796 to 1807. This period marked a significant chapter in Georgia's history as the young state sought to establish a stable and centralized seat of government. Located strategically on the Ogeechee River, Louisville was chosen to replace Augusta as the capital, primarily due to its more central location, which was intended to be more accessible to the state's growing population. The city was named in honor of King Louis XVI of France, in recognition of the French assistance during the American Revolution.

During its tenure as the capital, Louisville was the site of several important events and developments in Georgia's early history. It housed the state's government, including the governor's office and the state legislature. One of the notable structures from this era is the Jefferson County Courthouse, built in 1795, which still stands today as a historical landmark. Despite its promising beginnings, Louisville's role as the capital was relatively short-lived. By 1807, the capital was moved to Milledgeville, a decision influenced by the state's westward expansion and the need for a more centrally located seat of government to accommodate the shifting population and political dynamics.
